Terms of service

Last updated 26 August 2026

Who you are dealing with. Follow the Chords is run by legal name to be filled in, at registered address to be filled in. Write to support@followthechords.com about anything on this page and you will get a reply from a person.

These terms are the agreement between you and Follow the Chords. Opening an account means you accept the terms. They are written in plain English on purpose. Nothing in them takes away a right the law gives you as a consumer.

What Follow the Chords is

Follow the Chords is a lead guitar trainer that works in a web browser. Follow the Chords plays a backing band over a chord progression, shows the notes worth playing on a picture of the fretboard, plays a practice line and listens through your microphone to check what you played. Follow the Chords is a practice tool. Follow the Chords is not a music lesson, a qualification or advice and nobody promises you will improve.

Your account

The free trial

A new account gets the whole trainer free for seven days. No card is asked for and no card is held, so nothing is charged when the seven days end and no subscription starts by itself. When the trial ends the trainer stops opening and the rest of your account stays exactly as it is. Choosing to pay opens the trainer again with your practice record and your licks still there.

The free trial is one per person, not one per email address.

Prices and paying

Prices are shown on the pricing section of the home page. There are three ways to pay: monthly, yearly, or one payment for permanent access.

Paddle sells you the subscription, not us. Payments are handled by Paddle.com Market Limited, who are the merchant of record for every order. That means Paddle takes the payment, works out the sales tax or VAT for the country you are in and appears on your bank statement. Paddle's own buyer terms apply to the payment itself, alongside these terms.

What permanent access means

Paying once for permanent access means no renewal and no further payment for as long as Follow the Chords is open for business. It does not mean forever, because no website is forever. If Follow the Chords ever closes down you will get at least 90 days' notice by email and the Back up button in the trainer will keep working throughout, so your licks and your practice record leave with you as a file you keep.

What you may do

Use the trainer to practise, teach, prepare lessons and play what you learn wherever you like, including for money. Anything you write in the trainer is yours: your licks, your progressions and your practice record belong to you and are not ours to use.

What you may not do

What belongs to whom

The trainer, the exercises, the drum, bass and keyboard parts, the written licks that came with the trainer, the wording, the design and the name Follow the Chords all belong to us. You get permission to use all of it while your account is open and that permission is personal to you and cannot be passed on.

What you make is yours. We claim nothing over the licks you write, the progressions you type in or the recordings you make of yourself playing.

The site being up and the site changing

We try to keep Follow the Chords working and cannot promise it never goes down. Browsers change, hosts have outages and the trainer gets worked on. We may add exercises, change how a control works, or take a feature out if keeping it is doing more harm than good. Nothing you have already paid for will be quietly removed: if a change would take away something you paid for, you will be told before the change and offered a refund of the unused part.

Ending your account

You can close your account whenever you want by writing to support@followthechords.com. Press Back up in the trainer first if you want to keep your work, because closing an account deletes what is on it.

We can close an account that breaks these terms. Where the breach is something fixable you get a warning and a chance to fix it first. Where an account is closed for a breach, any unused part of a payment is still refunded, because keeping the money would be a fine rather than a refusal to serve.

Where we stand if something goes wrong

Follow the Chords is a practice tool, so the harm it can do is limited and so is what we owe you. We are responsible for losses that are a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care. We are not responsible for losses that were not foreseeable, for lost earnings, or for practice work you lost by never pressing Back up.

Whatever happens, what we owe you is capped at the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the problem.

Nothing here limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything the law does not allow us to limit. If you are a consumer, your legal rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 stand whatever this page says.

Changing these terms

These terms can change. A small change, such as a clearer sentence, takes effect when it is published and the date at the top changes with it. A change that affects your rights or your money gets at least 30 days' notice by email first and you can cancel and get the unused part back rather than accept it.

Law

These terms are under the law of England and Wales and the courts of England and Wales deal with any dispute. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you can also use your own courts. Nothing here stops a consumer using the courts of the country they live in where the law gives them that right.
